New Jersey stone quarry worker injured on the job

For a worker toiling daily in a hazardous environment, the threat of workplace accidents always looms large. On occasion, such injuries may even claim the life of the worker. At other times, they may result in temporary or permanent disability, burdensome medical expenses, and lost income due to time lost from work.

Recently a New Jersey stone quarry worker was trapped in an excavator beneath a boulder. The worker had been working in the quarry inside the excavator when a rock slide caused the boulder to get dislodged and fall on the excavator. Fortunately, the injured worker was extracted from the machine and flown to a local hospital to receive medical treatment for his injuries. According to a news report, his condition subsequently stabilized. A number of emergency workers responded to the accident, which remains under investigation.

If a worker is injured in an industrial accident, he or she is entitled to workers' compensation benefits, which can be instrumental in making up for the losses sustained. Of course, it is in the best interests of both the employer as well as the worker that the workplace remain free of health and safety violations, so as to avoid the possibility of an accident taking place.

Workers' compensation benefits are payable to an injured worker regardless of whether the employer was at fault in causing the accident. The accident must have occurred when the worker was in the course and scope of their employment, however. Benefits that are recoverable include medical expenses, lost wages, and compensation for temporary and permanent disability.
