Driver charged in car accident that injured New Jersey policeman

Car accidents are one of the leading causes of road fatalities in the United States and one of the major causes of car accidents is distracted driving. Distracted driving may be due to texting and driving or drunk driving, which is popularly known as driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated. Most states in the country, including New Jersey, have imposed stringent rules regarding such cases.

A 33-year-old driver was recently charged for injuring a New Jersey police officer. The driver, who was driving a SUV, had allegedly crashed into the patrol car of the police officer, injuring the officer who was standing, as well as two occupants of the vehicle the officer had stopped. The SUV driver was charged with DUI along with reckless driving. The accident investigation is still being conducted.

Fatalities due to car accidents may be on the rise. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2012, 33,561 car accident fatalities were reported, an increase of over 3 percent from the previous year. Overall there were 1,082 more deaths in 2012 then there were reported in 2011. Due to the gravity of the situation, drivers involved in car accidents may be charged with very serious crimes.

Penalties for anyone involved in a car accident may range from drivers license suspension or revocation, to heavy fines or even imprisonment. Furthermore, a driver indicted on DUI charges may suffer from a loss of reputation in the community. Being involved in a car accident can also adversely affect the driver's car insurance premium.

The law also gives the victim of an automobile accident opportunity for compensation from both the driver and his or her insurance company, particularly if the driver at fault was negligent or reckless. Accident investigations can usually help determine if this is the case. Consulting with a legal professional can help a victim of a car crash seek proper compensation in order to bring them a sense of wholeness following their experience.
