What mistakes do people make after car accidents?

It is common for individuals to make mistakes after being involved in car accidents. It's not surprising that mistakes are made, because most people don't know what steps they should take after a crash.

Unfortunately, mistakes can have major ramifications. Below are four common mistakes that motorists make after accidents.

Skipping a doctor visit

Many people involved in car accidents feel fine after the accident and never show signs of an injury. On the other hand, a fair number of people experience, say, minor whiplash and hope it resolves itself. They do not go to the doctor, and the injury worsens. Skipping a doctor visit could eventually result in mounting medical bills and an inability to prove a case for compensation in court. To be safe, see the doctor even if you feel fine.

Not taking the time to document

Medical attention for yourself or others should be your first priority, but if that is not an issue, you should document everything you can. For example, you can use your smartphone to snap pictures of your vehicle and the accident scene, and while events are fresh in your mind, you can record them. Do be careful to record them factually and to not make assumptions.

Admitting guilt

Speaking of making assumptions, they are what lead some people to admit guilt when they were not the guilty party. Perhaps you were indeed speeding 10 miles over the speed limit, but that in itself does not necessarily make the accident your fault. The other driver could have been texting or intoxicated, for instance. You just do not know, so avoid admitting guilt to the police or to the insurance company.

Waiting to seek compensation

New Jersey law gives you two years to file a personal injury claim from a car accident. Often, people wait too long. They may think their insurance company will help (then it does not to the extent expected), or that they will get better (then their injuries worsen). It is best to be as proactive as possible.
